A study was conducted to observe the incidence of gastrointestinal parasitic infections, qualitatively and quantitatively in apparently healthy Chegu goats from the tribal area of Lahaul and Spiti of Himachal Pradesh to generate a baseline data of the natural parasitic infections in that area. The qualitative coprological studies revealed that 76.66% goats were positive for one or another type of gastrointestinal parasites. The coccidian oocysts, ova of strongyles and amphistomes were found in 71.42%, 17.85% and 3.57%, animals, respectively. The quantitative coprological studies revealed the average egg per gram of faeces (EPG) to be 257.14 ± 62.67 with a range of 100 1200. Eimeria parva, Eimeria ovina and Eimeria ninakohlyakimovae were the species of coccidia that were identified. The average oocyst per gram of faeces was found to be 1010.71 ± 93.72 and it ranged between 300-2300.Keywords

The anthelmintic effect of indigenous medicinal plants namely Embelia ribes (seed) and Mangifera indica (bark) was evaluated against the exogenous stages of the poultry nematode Ascaridia galli. In vitro egg embryonation assay showed that the methanolic extract of Embelia ribes showed better inhibitory effect (61.23%) on the embryonation of eggs of Ascaridia galli than its aqueous extract (58.20%). Both M. indica and E. ribes had low inhibitory effect on the activity of second larval stage (L2) inside egg shell. The in vitro assay for larvicidal activity on the deshelled larvae of A. galli revealed that the aqueous extract of Embelia ribes at a concentration of 20 mg/ml exhibited moderate inhibitory effect of 77.66 ± 1.85 %. Adult motility assay revealed that the methanolic extract of E. ribes had a significant anthelmintic efficacy of 88.33%. The extracts from M. indica were found to have very low to moderate anthelmintic properties against various developmental stages of A. galli.Keywords

The anthelmintic effect of Carica papaya was evaluated against the exogenous and endogenous stages of the poultry nematode Ascaridia galli. This study aimed at assessing whether C.papaya could emerge as an alternative to anthelmintics for the control of A. galli in poultry production. For this purpose, the anthelmintic effect of both aqueous and methanolic extracts of C. papaya (seeds) was evaluated. Aqueous extract of C. papaya was found to be 93.33% effective against the deshelled larvae of A. galli at 60 mg/ml concentration. Adult motility assay revealed that the C. papaya aqueous extract was 100% effective in killing the adult worms of A. galli @ 20mg/ml. The anthelmintic effect was concentration and time dependent. The in vivo trials revealed that the aqueous extract of C. papaya @ 40 mg/ kg was effective in reducing the egg counts by 90.47% and the total worm count by 83.66% at 15 day post treatment.Keywords
